Vote for Ontario Colleges next week

A vote has been scheduled for Ontario college Faculty on the latest offer from the College Employer Council. Next week. From Tuesday at 10:00am – Thursday at 10:00am a vote will be conducted by electronic ballot to ensure that the maximum number of faculty can vote. The vote holds the potential of ending the strike, but not before the walk out rolls into it’s 5th week.
 

More than 17.7 million headed to fight homelessness

The Wynn Liberals announced this week that more is coming to fight homelessness in Greater Sudbury. More than $17.7 million was announced through the province’s Local Poverty Reduction Fund. A portion of that money will be used to build a 15-bed home for people in the harm reduction program.
 

Moonbeam says “no” to medical marijuana

In all the talk of medical marijuana, at least one community has already put out the idea. The town of Moonbeam, Ontario just North of Timmins and West of Cochran turned down a request to amend its business licensing bylaw, allowing for a medical marijuana dispensary. Council met in front of a packed house, most of which was in opposition of the idea.
 

Witnesses sought following altercation

Greater Sudbury Police are seeking witnesses to an altercation. Reports say two men were injured in the altercation with a 41-year-old man and a 58-year-old man, both suffering minor injuries. The incident occurred near the intersection of Lasalle Boulevard and Lansing Avenue.
 

Tax Levy up to 3.35%

The proposed tax levy hike in North Bay, thought to be around 2.7% has already been bumped up to 3.35 per cent following an initial meeting this week with council’s general government committee. A number of changes have been made. This is after an expectation that, without any adjustments, the levy could be reduced to 2.5 per cent once new assessment of $200,000, is factored in.
 

ATV riders reminded to stay off College Property

ATV enthusiasts are reminded to hold off on the throttle, and stay clear of a quiet college campus. At the end of Essa Avenue in South Porcupine, ATV tracks dig deep into the grass on property owned by Northern College. Evidently guardrails, and stop guards haven’t stopped the motorized vehicles from driving near the White Waterfront Conservation Area and Northern College’s walking trails. A reminder is being given that trespassing is a chargeable offence.
