Brush fire in Greater Sudbury calls in fire services
Greater Sudbury Fire Services managed to stamp out a bush fire on Kathleen Street just before the drive home started for many, yesterday. It happened at around 3:30 p.m. A number of fire trucks responded to the small fire that broke out behind the homes on the south side of the street. Thankfully, there was no damage to any nearby residences.
NOP wants in on the discussion, debate
Northern Ontario Party leader Trevor Holliday is demanding to be heard in a candidate’s debate for Nipissing. Holliday says that he’s been excluded from the upcoming debate adding that organizers have decided to invite only the local Liberal, Progressive Conservative, New Democrat and Green candidates.
Over 4,000 pot holes filled… in a single month
It was a bumpy ride through a conversation regarding potholes, yesterday at Timmins city hall. Now that the snow is gone, Denise Street and Laforest Road are being named as among the worst roads in this city. Thériault Boulevard and Algonquin Boulevard were also on the list. So far, this year’s busiest patch came in April, when just over 4,000 potholes filled.
600k goes toward experiential learning
Roughly $600,000 in Provincial funding is headed toward helping some at Algoma University students, get more experiential learning opportunities. That’s according to the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development’s Career Ready Fund. They say they money will be spread over two years and will develop a Career Link program to help Indigenous students find work with Indigenous groups and First Nation communities.
Budget under review
The North East Local Health Integration Network says that a team will thumb through the 2018-19 budget. The group says this is all to have a third-party validation of Health Sciences North’s proposed 2018-2019 budget. Last month, the hospital announced it wants to cut 76 full-time equivalent positions to balance its budget. Thus far, 37 management and non-unionized jobs had already been cut.
Training puts fire fighters in the lake
Firefighters with the Mattagami First Nation Fire Department south of Timmins, went right off the edge this past week, into the Mattagami River. This was all during spring break-up and part of a larger training exercise. Personnel say that the training is necessary as the First Nation sees two or three incidents a year on the water, involving residents, pets, or motorists.
