Most of Ontario enters stage One TODAY

Most of Ontario has taken the first step in its reopening.  It will allow patios to resume operation and non-essential retail to accept in-person customers again at reduced numbers. Outdoor social gatherings and organized public events can have up to 10 people.  Indoor religious services and ceremonies, including wedding services and funeral services, will be capped at 15%.  For full details go here.
 

PHU catchment area remains closed

The Porcupine Health Unit area will remain closed. Another 51 COVID-19 cases were added yesterday, mostly in remote areas.  A total of 45 of the cases are in the James Bay and Hudson Bay region, five are in Timmins and one is in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls.
 

PHSD testing all public beaches, waterways this Monday

Public Health Sudbury and Districts will begin pre-seasonal testing of all public waterways beaches Monday. It’s all to ensure they are suitable for public recreational use.  Testing includes a sampling of water for E. coli and conducting safety checks for hazards that would render the beach area unsafe. This work will continue until June 25th.
 

Ski Club Road reopens following an incident involving Police

Ski Club Road in North Bay has fully reopened following a heavy Police presence in the 700 block yesterday. Police stated to the media shortly after 2 pm indicating they were dealing with an individual in crisis. Residents were asked to avoid the area and remain in their homes.  Forty minutes later, the police service issued a statement saying the incident had been resolved but they would stay in the area a while longer.   but that there would a continued police presence in the area.
 

Sault Ste Marie doubles on building permits

The number of building permits issued by the City of Sault Ste. Marie to date has almost doubled the previous year. May stats released by the city’s building department show that 500 permits have been issued so far this year with a construction value of $50.7 million. That’s up from the same time period in 2020 when 367 permits were issued with a construction value of almost $16.2 million.
 

St Charles in Greater Sudbury connecting to Natural Gas

Roughly 160 homes and businesses in St. Charles in Greater Sudbury will finally be able to connect to natural gas.  It’s all due to the province’s Natural Gas Expansion Program.  Extended to homes, businesses and farms, the government days the average household could save $250 to $1,500 per year in energy costs by switching to natural gas. Businesses are expected to save up to 30 percent per year on energy costs.

Snow mobilers getting some gas in North Bay

While many have just ridden out the first heatwave of the year, North Bay City Council has approved a by-law allowing snowmobile clubs expanded opportunities.  The move grants access to additional hotels, gas stations, and snowmobile dealerships within city limits. Clubs have also requested $15,000 in annual funding to build, maintain, sign and groom the access trails to the approved businesses, and $40,000 in funding to purchase equipment.
 

Four new fires in the North East, three in Greater Sudbury

Four new Wild Fires have flared up in the North East. Of the four, three are in the Greater Sudbury area.  All at 0.1 of a hectare,  Sudbury 38 is being held is north of Lone Lake.  Sudbury 39 is 2 kilometres northeast of Broker Lake and Sudbury 40, is approximately 1 kilometre east of Horseshoe Lake Road and east of Paddy Lake.  The fire hazard is mostly low to moderate in areas of the region situated north of Timmins and west of Sault Ste Marie. It remains high to extreme in most areas south of Timmins and east of Sault Ste Marie.
 

Four Nipissing boards go ahead with virtual grads

Four school boards in the Nipissing area have confirmed there will not be any in-person graduation ceremonies locally this year. Instead, graduates will attend virtual events.  While they’ve been given the go-ahead from the Province,  it all comes down to being able to COVID-19 safety protocols.  There will be an opportunity for a drive-by component to provide graduates and immediate family.
