16 stopped for stunt driving in Greater Sudbury

Greater Sudbury Police stopped at least 16 speeders over the weekend. Drivers, going so fast, they were busted on stunt driving. GSPS said one driver was clocked doing 180 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
 

Missing: 30-year-old Theresa George

The North Bay Police Service asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 30-year-old woman. Theresa George is described as five feet one inch tall, 115 pounds, with brown curly shoulder-length hair, brown eyes, a slim build, tattoos on her arm, a rabbit tattoo on her right ankle, and last seen wearing a grey oversized hoody and blue baggy jeans. Anyone who has seen Theresa George is asked to call the police.
 

PHU warns of potential COVID-19 exposure

The Porcupine Health Unit has issued an advisory about a potential public exposure to COVID-19. It’s for individuals who attended a family drumming event at the Timmins Native Friendship Centre last Tuesday, July 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The exposure to the public is considered low risk, and those at the event should self-monitor for symptoms.
 

$9 million in federal gas tax funding coming to Sault Ste Marie

The City of Sault Ste Marie is slated to get $9 M in revamped federal gas tax funding. It can be used for 19 project eligibility categories, including capacity building, sport infrastructure and broadband. Sault Ste. Marie will receive about $4.65 million in the annual funding infrastructure money and a ‘top up’ allocation of $4.47 million.
 

VALE and Steelworkers Local 6500 back at the table.

Negotiators for Steelworkers Local 6500 and Vale hope are back at it, for the third time in two months. Members of the local will consider a contract offer from the Brazilian mining giant. On May 31, Local 6500 rejected a tentative agreement with Vale leading to strike action that began June 1.
 

One new forest fire confirmed in the northeast

One new forest fire has been confirmed in the northeast region. Sudbury 54, located on an island in Whitson Lake is 0.1 of a hectare and under control. Currently, there are 11 active fires in the region. Of these, one is under control and 10 are being observed.

Full-sized court will double as a skating rink

A proposed full-sized basketball court in Sundridge will play double duty. Part of the Edgar Street Park project, Town Council a concrete base, over one made from asphalt will allow it to become an outdoor ice rink during the winter. That said, the concrete base will cost $30,000 more than the asphalt base, pushing back the installation of playground equipment for another year.
