Places des Arts gets $1.1 million from FedNor

A funding announcement today saw FedNor unveil $2.4M to fund several Francophone initiatives.  It’s going toward four strategic initiatives.   As part of the funding, Places des Arts, the under-construction site of the announcement, will receive $1.1 million to cover additional construction costs as well as equipment for the multipurpose studio that’s part of the project.
 

5-week road closure coming for North Bay drivers

The City of North Bay is advising residents of an upcoming road closure.  Set to begin next week, Wallace Road will be closed between Lake Heights Road and Commerce Court for up to five weeks. It starts Monday all to install a deep sanitary sewer. Due to the location of the closure, a detour is not feasible.
 

Timmins Police Youth in Policing at Urban Market

The Timmins Police Youth in Policing program will be at the Urban Market in downtown Timmins for the next few weeks.  Focusing on community safety, they’ve been teaching kids the safety of bike riding and talking policing. Those involved have been looking at studying police foundations after Grade 12.
 

Fines coming for smoking at SAH

Fines are coming when it comes to smoking in Sault Ste Marie at the SAH. City council recently approved an amendment to the smoking bylaw and appointed officers that allow Sault Area Hospital the tools for additional enforcement of the smoking bylaw on its property and in the general area of the hospital.  As of Jan. 1, 2018, smoking was banned on all hospital properties across Ontario under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act.
 

1 case of Lyme Desease confirmed on Manitoulin

Heading into the weekend, Public Health Sudbury and Districts have confirmed an adult from the Manitoulin District has tested positive for Lyme disease.  Those enjoying the outdoors need to check for ticks immediately after activities like gardening or hiking. Blacklegged ticks are the ones that can be infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.
 

Elliot Lake seeking community input

Elliot Lake is seeking public input. It’s regarding the city’s proposed recreational facilities. To that end, two public meetings have been set up for next week to collect your opinions. The first will be held virtually on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. It will be online via Zoom. It will be streamed live on the city’s website.

Glencore returning $2.8 billion with shareholders

Glencore says they will return $2.8 billion to shareholders this year, following a record performance for the first six months of the year. The company says following COVID-19’s severe global impacts in early 2020, the subsequent economic recovery has seen prices of most of our commodities surging to multi-year highs. Glencore is one of Sudbury’s top employers, with more than 1,200 employees and another 1,200 who work as contractors.
 

Duchesnay Creek Bridge nearing completion

The MTO says construction of the new Duchesnay Creek Bridge on Highway 17B is nearing completion.  It’s anticipated that the entire project will be completed in late 2021.  The work has included the completion of a new bridge, resurfacing of approximately one kilometre of Highway 17B, and the removal of the former overhead bridge.
 

Timmins Police – Be Bear Wise

Once again, residents in the Timmins area being reminded… to be bear wise. This is following another increase in bear calls to city Police.  Thus far there has been no need for a police response as there has been no threat to public safety.  Non-emergency sightings can be reported to the provincial Bear Wise line at 1-866-514-2327.
