LU says vaccines will be required for Students in residence, varsity
Laurentian University has reversed its position requiring vaccinations in some of its student population. In June, the school said wouldn’t be requiring vaccinations for students living in on-campus residences. However, in a statement yesterday, the school’s president says this stance has now changed after consulting with the local health unit. Cambrian College also made a similar reversal in its position on the same topic last month.
Students living in Laurentian University residences and varsity athletes will be required to have at least one dose of an approved Health Canada or the World Health Organization (WHO) emergency use list by Sept. 4, and a second dose by Oct. 15.
Vaccination clinics wrap up at the Gardens Monday
Monday will see the final COVID-19 vaccine clinic take place at Memorial Gardens in North Bay. The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit transformed the arena into a clinic in March to administer thousands of COVID-19 vaccinations to those 12 years of age and older. Nearly 70,000 (67,116 doses as of Aug 9th) of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered at Memorial Gardens this year.
Cambrian College starts new cybersecurity program
Cambrian College is launching a new cybersecurity graduate certificate program. It starts in January 2022. In this two-semester program, students will learn how to protect computers, applications and networks from unauthorized and malicious users or software.
Recreational multi-use court coming in North Bay
North Bay City Council has approved a contract worth nearly $400,000 Tuesday, new multi-use recreational court in the downtown-waterfront area. It will be located adjacent to Municipal Parking Lot 10 at the end of Wyld Street, near the transit terminal. The stipulation for the joint provincial/federal financial contribution is the project must be substantially completed before the end of this year.
Potential COVID-19 exposure for Air Canada flight from Toronto to Timmins
A potential COVID-19 exposure advisory has been issued for a flight from Toronto to Timmins. The exposure is for the Tuesday, Aug. 10 Air Canada flight AC8283 that was scheduled to leave Toronto for Timmins at 7 a.m. People who sat in rows eight to 12 are considered high risk and must self-isolate immediately. Everyone else should monitor for symptoms.
Two swimming advisories issued in Blind River
Algoma Public Health has issued two swimming advisories. Water samples collected from Sellers Park Beach and Old Mill Beach in Blind River contained high levels of bacteria. The water is tested weekly.

Downtown BIA hoping for a pedestrian-centric area
The Downtown Timmins BIA is hoping to make its area pedestrian-centric. It’s asking city council to strike a committee to study is a civic square where the parking lot is now on Cedar Street, across from the old Victory Theatre. A presentation to city council this week indicates it would feature a replica McIntyre headframe, lighting and water feature while serving as a stage for city events.
Storm does significant damage on St. Joes Island
A thunderstorm in the Sault Ste Marie with High winds and Heavy Rain resulted in damage in parts of the Soo and St. Joseph Island. Downed trees were called in, in some areas. Details on exactly how much damage was caused is not known at this time. No injuries were reported.
