Sault Ste Marie Police looking for 70-year-old David Murphy
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is seeking the help of the public to locate a missing Sault man. 70-year-old David Murphy was last seen on Wednesday morning at around 8 a.m. on Alworth Place. Police say it is believed that he was going to Bellevue Park in a white 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe. Murphy is described as having a Medium build with White hair.
Water discolouration in Copper Cliff and Lively possible
Water discolouration could be happening for some in the Lively and Copper Cliff area. Specifically, on Old Creighton Road at MR 24. It’s all due to water main work. Residents with discoloured water should slowly run a cold water tap near their water meter for a few minutes until water is clear of sediment. For prolonged water discolouration issues, residents should call 311.
Callander Library will deliver to assist with mobility issues
The Callander public library is launching a free delivery service. It’s all thanks to a $5,000 grant. The intention is to reach residents who may have difficulties accessing the building. The grant comes from the Village Collective Impact Project, which operates out of Canadore College, fuelled by the Federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
Sault Ste Marie fire personnel respond to a chemical spill
Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services were called to the scene of a chemical spill. It was in the 100 block of Industrial Court B. The call came in at around 1 pm yesterday. Upon arrival, crews used appropriate personal protective equipment to investigate and mitigate the scene. The spill was contained to a small area; power was shut off to ensure all ignition sources were eliminated and a third-party company has since been contacted by the owner to further mitigate and clean up the spill. There are no injuries to report.
A swimming advisory issued for Gillies Lake
A swimming advisory has been issued for Gillies Lake in the Timmins area. According to the Porcupine Health Unit, the water may contain high levels of bacteria. The water is not recommended for swimming. During the summer, the water at three Timmins lakes with beaches is tested weekly. The latest samples were taken this week on Aug. 11.
Red-light cameras coming to Greater Sudbury
Those in Greater Sudbury who like to joust with morning traffic, beware. That’s because the City of Greater Sudbury is on track to have red-light cameras installed at six of eight intersections identified in a 2019 report. This follows five years of motor vehicle collision data across the city. The first red light camera system could be installed as early as this fall.
Ice coming back to Memorial Gardens
Ice-making at Memorial Gardens will be getting to work over the next several weeks. The city says Ice at the arena will be ready on Aug. 30, in time for the North Bay Battalion training camp. Rentals for the public will begin on Sept. 2.
Timmins Native Friendship Centre gets a donation of supplies
The Timmins Native Friendship Centre is getting a donation of leftover food, equipment and supplies. This is what’s left from when the City of Timmins hosted forest fire evacuees are going back into the community. The Timmins Evacuation Team has donated a truck and trailer load of supplies.
Businesses still feeling the COVID-19 squeeze
The latest survey results are in from Workforce Planning for Sudbury and Manitoulin, and its partners, the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce and the City of Greater Sudbury. They indicate, that most businesses across Sudbury-Manitoulin continue to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This is their fourth survey of businesses in the region since the pandemic started in March 2020. The City of Greater Sudbury is working on an economic recovery plan to help struggling businesses.
31-year-old male charged with arson
Sault Ste Marie Police have charged a 31-year-old with arson. This is after Police were notified of damage to a doorway at a multi-unit residence in the 200 block of McNabb Street caused by a small fire this week. An investigation began and through the investigation, officers developed grounds to suggest the fire was intentionally set. The accused lives in the residence.
