Heat warning in effect for the North East
A heat warning is in effect across the North East. Environment Canada says hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can cause the Air Quality Health Index to approach the high-risk category. They say to drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Make sure they are remaining in cool places.
Fire displaces two families in Greater Sudbury
Two Greater Sudbury families have been displaced following a fire. It happened yesterday in the second-storey apartment of a rowhouse on John Street in Chelmsford. A faulty plug-in air-conditioning unit is said to have caught fire. There were no injuries, but the damage has been pegged at $100,000
Duchesnay Bridge nearing stage 1 completion
Nipissing First Nation says Stage 1 of the Duchesnay bridge replacement project will be completed this week. Stage 2 of the project, which will include reducing the hill between the entrance to Duchesnay and Highway 17, and creating a new entrance into Duchesnay can begin. A full closure of that section will be in effect through the month of September.
Timmins Police investigates fatal colission
Timmins Police is continuing its investigation into a fatal collision involving. This is after a cyclist and a pickup truck collided at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Birch Street North on Tuesday. It was determined the driver of the pickup truck struck the cyclist who sustained significant injury and was transported to Timmins and District Hospital. He has since succumbed.
Sudbury Women’s shelter has moved
The Sudbury Women’s Centre has moved. After being on Elm Street for the better part of 23 years, it is now on Douglas Street. The location is reportedly able to accommodate an increase in client needs, brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Residents called, again, to be tick-wise
The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is advising residents to be tick-wise. This is after an increase in Lyme disease has been detected in the district. Between April and July 2021, there have been two confirmed and two probable cases of Lyme disease among individuals residing in the region.
Algonquin Blv. construction nearing completion in Timmins
The city of Timmins says reconstruction of Algonquin Blvd. between Thériault and the river is moving into its final phase. As a result, the intersection at Thériault Blvd. will be closed as of Monday. The target deadline of completion for the entire stretch is October.
Construction continues in Soo
Construction season in Sault Ste. Marie is continuing. The date, 824 permits have been issued, with a value of $111.68 million. That said, while the number of permits issued are similar to the numbers issued in 2020, the value of those permits is more than double the value of the $45.9 million of permits issued during the same time frame.
