Cooking blamed for a kitchen fire in Elliot Lake

Careless Cooking has been blamed as the cause of a fire in Elliot Lake.  It happened Wednesday, at a row house complex on Farrell Crescent. Upon arrival on the scene, the fire department crew reported smoke showing. Crews were able to get the fire under control quickly. The fire was contained to the one unit, with heavy damage in the kitchen area. The fire was accidental and there are no injuries reported. The estimated damage was $200,000.
 

Festival requires attendees to be vaccinated

Sudbury’s Northern Lights Festival Boréal is the latest event to require will attendees to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Ticket holders who cannot be vaccinated must have a negative COVID-19 test result within the past 48 hours or receive a rapid test at the door before admittance.  Performers, staff and volunteers will also need to adhere to the same vaccination and testing guidelines.
 

Callander considering mail-in ballots

For the first time in recent memory… Callander town council is considering mail-in ballots. The town has long been doing paper ballot was cast in-personnel. The council is considering adopting a mail-in ballot for the 2022 municipal election. The idea remains in the preliminary stage, with council directing staff to create an in-depth report on the option.
 

Lost drive shaft results in vehicle rollover

Timmins Police responded to a vehicle rollover yesterday between South Porcupine and Schumacher. It happened near the top of Rae Hill. after the car lost its drive shaft, forcing the closure of Hwy. 101. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
 

One new fire discovered in the North East

A new wildland fire has been discovered in the northeast region. The fire, Chapleau 6, was confirmed earlier this evening by the Ministry of Natural Resources Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services division. It is located early this evening west of Kapuskasing Lake, is 3.5 hectares and is not yet under control. The fire is one of 10 active fires in the northeast region.
 

Powassan town council will remain at 5 members

The size of the Powassan town council will remain at five members. A call to increase to seven was discussed by the town council. Several reasons were cited for maintaining the number of council members, including identifying enough qualified candidates to seek public office in future elections and continuing to save money.
 

Timmins Chamber of Commerce calling for assessment centre

The Timmins Chamber of Commerce is calling on the Province to establish an assessment centre in the city. If it goes ahead, it would allow business travellers to get the required COVID-19 test for international travel. The assessment centre on Ross Avenue doesn’t offer that particular test.
