It’s cold…. “extremely” so.

Timmins residents woke up this morning to an extreme cold weather alert. Enviroment Canada says that Very cold wind chill values near minus 40 will moderate later this morning. They say, dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.
 

Fire took 3 hours to put out

The cause of a blaze that took over three hours to put out yesterday in Greater Sudbury remains under investigation. The fire at a Val Caron home broke out at around 1 p.m. yesterday started in a garage on Glendale Avenue but spread to the affiliated home. Thankfully, everyone was able to exit safely, without injury.
 

State of the art facility opens in North Bay

The lights shown a little brighter in the Northern Ontario’s film industry yesterday. Canadore College opened the doors to what they call a state-of-the-art post production facility. The school says the 5,500 sq. ft facility which will allow TV and movie crews to stay right here in the North to complete any post production from their projects.
 

Angus reveals his National Suicide Prevention Plan

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus has released details of a proposed national action plan for suicide prevention. It was at the Mushkegowuk Tribal Council emergency summit that wrapped up in Timmins on Thursday. Some of the components of this proposed action plan would include the creation of a national public health surveillance program for the prevention of suicide and the identification of groups at risk. Angus say that communities have suffered an “extraordinary amount of loss” and there is a need to take action.
 

Research continues into “silent killer”

$30,000 from NEO Kids foundation and it’s research institute, is moving to quiet a silent killer. Exposure to radon. They say that one of their own, scientist Dr. Leslie Sutherland is working on a research program which is not found anywhere else in Ontario. The study is regarding human cells of the lung, at the molecular level. Radon is an odourless, tasteless chemical and primary cause of non-smoking related lung cancers.
 

Losing confidence in the Province

We’re not under 4 months away from a Provincial election, and small business say they’re losing confidence in the Ontario Government. At least, in Sault Ste. Marie. According to a report from the Soo’s chamber of commerce, more than 40 per cent of the respondents say they’re not confident in Ontario’s economic outlook and 82 per cent of the respondents saying they can’t recruit or retain properly trained workers. The Provincial Election is June 7th.
