Fake gun, draws police and significant charges
It shut down an entire section of the Rainbow Mall yesterday in Sudbury. A teen now facing significant charges after an altercation between a number of people yesterday led to false reports of a gun being drawn. A description of the suspect led to a police search of the area and he was found at 2:40 walking on Elm Street.
Synthetic turf coming to North Bay ball diamond
The city of North Bay is moving ahead with a major upgrade to Veterans Field; an upgrade which will include a synthetic grass infield. City Council approved the award of a contract this week to the tunes of just over ½ million dollars. North Bay Minor Baseball and the North Bay Senior Men’s Baseball League are kicking in a $75,000 contribution.
Senior charged following collision
An 87-year-old woman was taken to hospital by ambulance with life threatening injuries early yesterday in Sault Ste. Marie. This was following a two-vehicle crash at Great Northern Road and Northern Avenue. Police say the crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. This is all after one of the vehicles involved attempted to turn westbound on Northern Avenue, in front of second vehicle. Two others were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An 88-year-old male from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged.
Coin, comic book theft leaves hit small town
A coin heist in the Province has members of the OPP looking for information. This is following the theft of a rare collector in Cobalt. Police said it was sometime between March 8, 2018 and March 11, 2018, that a person or persons unlawfully entered an apartment building on Silver Street, and once inside stole $35,000 worth of collector’s coins and $2,000 worth of comic books. The investigation is ongoing.
Cab prices set to go up
The cost of a cab will come up next week for Sudbury City Council. With the recent increase in Ontario’s minimum wage, local taxi companies say they’re being hit hard, and adjustments need to be made. The report recommends allowing companies to hike their rates by five per cent in the city, which would make a cab ride in Greater Sudbury among the most expensive in Northern Ontario.
10 year sentence given in plea deal
The case involving a two-year altercation turned fatal is now over. Timmins resident, 19-year-old Nathan Koostachin has pled guilty to manslaughter and has been handed a 10-year-sentence in the death of after 19-year-old Austin Thériault was found dead in Bozzer Park. This was all to avoid first-degree murder charges. The plea deal was agreed upon by the defense and prosecution.
