Vale lays off 18 workers
Vale in Greater Sudbury says they’ve laid off 18 full-time non-union employees. This is from across various areas of their Sudbury operations. A Vale rep says that the past year has been one of transformation for Vale’s Ontario operations, particularly due to the closure of Stobie Mine. The 18 individuals worked in service and support staff roles, and were given notice this week.
Waste management audit coming
The City of Timmins is putting together a waste management audit that will be conducted over the few weeks. This is all to find out if city residents are doing enough in the way of recycling and waste reduction. Environmental consultants, has been contracted to complete audits of residential waste, with assistance from the City, the final stage of which will take place from April 23 to May 4.
Parking ban still in place
The City of Sault Ste. Public Works and Engineering Services says that while many streets in the Sault may be bare and dry…. a parking prohibition is in effect until April 30. Overnight parking on all City streets is prohibited from midnight until 6 a.m so that city crews, who are working 24 hours can remove snow from streets.
Bank pulls out of West Ferris
The Spring marks the end of another business in West Ferris. Scotiabank says they’re merging their Nipissing Plaza location on Lakeshore Drive with its branch at Northgate Shopping Centre this fall. Letters are headed out to customers in May. The Lakeshore Drive location is the last remaining bank in West Ferris.
Over 200 now have Summer jobs in Timmins
Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says his riding continues to roll forward, when it comes to Summer Jobs Funding. The MP spoke to reporters this week and says 208 students will be working this summer in the riding thanks to the Canada Summer Jobs Program.
Angus says, over $624,000 in funding has come in.
Espanola couple bilked out of 100k
Espanola Police are asking anyone in the community who may have been targeted by the so-call “emergency scam” to give them a call. This is after an elderly couple was allegedly defrauded of more than $100,000 – money they thought they were using to bail one of their children out of jail and subsequent lawyer fees. Police opened their investigation into the alleged fraud this week, after learning the couple had been contacted by someone who claimed to be a lawyer in Ottawa.
