Fatal collision closes Highway 17 yesterday, west of North Bay

North Bay Police responded to a fatal head-on collision yesterday on Highway 17. It happened just before 1 pm on Highway 17 West Sunday afternoon, at Nipissing First Nation, west of Trap and Skeet Road. The driver of the eastbound vehicle suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the westbound vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The passenger of the westbound vehicle was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The highway reopened at around 6:30 pm. The investigation continues.
 

Four taken to hospital following a vehicle rollover in Powassan

Four were rushed to the hospital Sunday afternoon after a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 11. The accident happened in the northbound lanes, in Powassan, at Clark Street just after 3:30. One of the passengers suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries, while the other three occupants sustained minor injuries.
 

Lifeguards on beaches in Greater Sudbury

Seven municipal beaches in Greater Sudbury now have lifeguard supervision from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The city says in a news release that lifeguards are not a substitute for adult supervision and that no child should ever be at the beach alone. COVID-19 precautions remain in place at beaches. One fire east of Cochrane at 140 hectares in size

20 active fires continue to burn across the northeast region, of these eight are not under control. Cochrane 15 is 140 hectares and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located 50km east of Cochrane. There are currently three fire crews, one overhead staff, two helicopters and heavy equipment assigned to this fire.
Of the new fires,
• Sudbury 48 is under control at 0.1 of a hectare. This fire is located northwest of Rushbrook Provincial Park.
• Sudbury 49 is under control at 0.1 of a hectare. The fire is located near Round Lake.
• Kirkland 8 is now out at 0.1 of a hectare. This fire was located south of Boston Creek.
• North Bay 13 is 0.2 of a hectare and not under control at the time of this update. The fire is located within Mattawa River Provincial Park.
• Sudbury 50 is 0.1 of a hectare and not under control at the time of this update. This fire is located near Lake Panache.
 

Romano now Minister of Government and Consumer Services

Following a Ford cabinet shuffle, Sault Ste Marie MPP Ross Romano, is now Minister of Government and Consumer Services. Up until now, Romano has served as Romano served as the Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities. Romano’s new ministry is responsible for consumer protection, helping government ministries with services such as procurement and pay and benefits and managing Ontario’s archives.
 

COVID-19 exposure risk following social gathering

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is advising of a potentially high risk of COVID-19 exposure. It’s tied to a social gathering at an area locally known as “Morgan Beach” located on Morgan Road situated between Chelmsford and Dowling. Those at that event on June 16 between 2:30 and 8 p.m. should seek a COVID-19 test and self-isolate.

PHU could ease restrictions by this weekend… maybe

The Porcupine Health Unit region could have some of its current restrictions eased by this weekend, trends continue. Dr. Lianne Catton provided an update on the COVID-19 situation in the region ahead of the weekend. Catton said the average number of cases per day in the region has begun to decrease.
 

Delki Dozzi Regional Park loop getting rehabilitated

The one-kilometre paved loop at the Delki Dozzi Regional Park is getting a facelift. Thanks to funds from federal and provincial governments, the work will involve installing a granular base and asphalt and replacing existing light standards with 26 new LED lighting standards. The federal government is providing more than $447,000 for the project, with another $111,000 coming from the province.
