State of Emergency in Timmins lifted

The state of emergency for Timmins has been lifted. In place for more than a month, the City of Timmins made the announcement yesterday. The Porcupine Health Unit confirmed the region would enter step one of the Roadmap to Reopen tomorrow.
 

North Bay Jail set to close for two-weeks

The Solicitor General’s office says that the North Bay Jail will be closing temporarily. It’s as the facility deals with a COVID-19 outbreak. Approximately 60 inmates will be transferred to other facilities to better isolate those affected, and mitigate the spread.
 

GHU giving a nod to Municipal Station last week

Greater Sudbury Hydro is giving a nod to the refurbishment of the Gemmell municipal substation. Located at the corner of Gemmell Street and Barrydowne Road, work on the 53-year-old substation was completed in 2020 as a necessary part of the Distribution System Plan Capital program. These upgrades will improve the reliability and resilience of the distribution system in the New Sudbury area.
 

One new wildfire confirmed in the North East

One new wildland fire was confirmed in the Northeast region yesterday afternoon. Sudbury 51 is near the eastern shore of Raven Lake, just west of Highway 6. It is 0.7 of a hectare in size, and not yet under control.
 

PHSD passes 70% first dose mark for COVID-19 vaccines

PHSD says they have passed the 70-per-cent mark for receiving the first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. The numbers were published yesterday afternoon. Of the total population, nearly 122k (121,845) area residents have taken their first dose since the vaccine rollout began locally back in January, which marks 73.2 percent.
 

Heavy rainfall expected in the next few days

Heavy rainfall expected over the next few days in the Sault Ste. Marie Region could cause flooding. To that end, the Conservation Authority is issuing a flood outlook for area residents. They say in total, rainfall amounts could 45 to 60 mm, which could cause water levels in local rivers, creeks and streams to rise.

The city of Elliot Lake cancels annual drag race

The city of Elliot Lake says the 21st Annual North Shore Challenge Drag Race has been pulled off the road. It’s all due to the ongoing reopening of the Province. Elliot Lake officials recommended the popular event be cancelled and the council agreed.
 

SAH received $23.8 million in funding from the Province

Sault Area Hospital is working to mitigate a deficit, thanks to funding from the Province. $24 ($23.8) million to help its coffers cushion the blow of what the hospital calls “significant unplanned” expenditures due to the pandemic. This spring the SAH reported a deficit from hospital operations at $4.4 million compared to last year’s surplus of $700,000.
