Two unrelated fires remain under investigation
An early morning fire yesterday in Greater Sudbury has been deemed suspicious. It happened at a boarded-up house along the Kingsway. The call came into Police just before 6. The area around the fire was closed down for a time. The Ontario Fire Marshal was been contacted and uniform officers are currently on the scene.

The cause of a house fire in Elliot Lake is still under investigation. Fire personnel were called to a residence on Mississauga Ave. Wednesday at around 8:30 am. While a pet did perish, the resident was not at home at the time. The estimated damages are being pegged at between $300,000 – $350,000.”
PHU catchment area moves into step one TODAY
COVID-19 restrictions have loosened in Timmins and area, as the Porcupine Health Unit area moves into step one. Most of the Porcupine Health Unit region got there two weeks ago. The exception for the PHU is Moosonee, where enhanced restrictions are still in place.
Sault College is playing ball on a new sports management program
Sault College has given the go-ahead to a new program. Starting this fall, the post-secondary school’s first-ever Sports Management program is looking to hit the ground running. The board approved a two-year diploma program at a meeting held virtually late yesterday afternoon and is awaiting final approval from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
Firefighters arrive in Greater Sudbury to fight area blazes
Greater Sudbury welcomed firefighters from Alberta this week… 84 of them to help fight forest fires in the region. The fires of note include Kirkland Lake 6; being held at 100 hectares, located five kilometres north of Highway 66 near Matachewan First Nation. Cochrane 15; being held at 140 hectares, located 50 kilometres east of the town of Cochrane and Cochrane 13, about 120 kilometres northeast of the town of Cochrane, Ont. Crews are holding that fire at 301 hectares.
No funfest in Callander… once again.
The town of Callander has cancelled its annual FunFest once again. They will not be setting off fireworks. Even with the ease of restrictions, it’s due to the ongoing pandemic. In 2019 the show was delayed due to high water levels on Lake Nipissing and was cancelled last year due to COVID-19.
The city of North Bay to evict those in “Tent City”
By the evening of July 1, the city of North Bay says they will evict more than 40 residing in tents at the corner of Ferguson Street and Third Avenue West. The city continues to explore options when it comes to helping those in need of housing.

Property crime dropping in Sault Ste Marie
Sault Ste Marie Police say property crime numbers in Sault Ste. Marie dropped in the first four months of 2021. Among the numbers, reported break and enters dipped 23 percent from 319 in January to April 2020 to 245 in the same four-month span in 2021.
