VALE spending $150 mil to expand operations…. in Manitoba
Vale Ltd. in Greater Sudbury says they will spend $150 million to extend current mining activities in Thompson, Man. by a decade. Vale says this is the largest single investment they have made in Thompson operations in the past twenty years. This is as 2400 workers in Greater Sudbury are still on strike. They’ve been on the picket lines for more than a month. No new talks are scheduled.
Highway 112 closed following washout, detours in place
The Ministry of Transportation has closed a section of Highway 112 in the Kirkland Lake area due to a severe road washout. The washout occurred approx. 2km southeast of the area’s Kirkland Lake Gold mine site. Detours are in place.
Driver caught following fatal collision, flight from police
The driver involved in a fatal collision on Highway 11 has been charged. Temiskaming OPP says the driver was one of two involved in the collision and shortly afterward fled the scene. It happened Wednesday morning. A 42-year-old man from the Kirkland Lake area is facing charges.
NOSM announces new Ac. Director of New Center for Social Accountability
The Northern Ontario School of Medicine has appointed an academic director for the new Centre for Social Accountability. NOSM president Sarita Verma announced Wednesday that Erin Cameron will assume the role on July 1, for a three-year term. The school says Erin is a well-known faculty member and an active academic researcher.
Public meetings held for “Whitson River Trail”
The City of Greater Sudbury is hosting virtual public information sessions for the Whitson River Trail. The trail is a two-kilometre active transportation route extending from the Chelmsford Town Centre, along the Whitson River to Brookside Avenue. The city says the Construction of the trail will provide for a better connection between the Chelmsford Town Centre, the local branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library and nearby neighbourhoods. The session will be held from 6-7 p.m. on July 6. Residents may tune in anytime to review plans and ask questions. A short presentation will take place at the beginning of the session.

Town of Callander picks site for New Fire Hall
The town of Callander has picked a site for a new fire hall. Slated to be on Callander Bay Drive, near Swale Street, the 2.7-hectare parcel of land has been owned by the municipality for years but has not been used for anything other than a landfill. The town also is considering using the site for a new municipal operations facility, which would include a 6,000-square-foot sand dome and an 800-square-foot salt shed.

Mountjoy Farmers Market kicks off Saturday
The Mountjoy Farmers Market kicks off its new season tomorrow. Hosted in the Participark, parking lot, beside the Mattagami River, safety protocols will remain in place, including social distancing. The market runs from 9:00 am to noon every Saturday until Thanksgiving.
Golf Carts should say off the highway – OPP
And OPP is reminding Golf Cart owners to stay off the highway. Some have been spotted in the Kapuskasing, Cochrane and surrounding communities. In short, while they have four wheels they’re not fit for highway travel as they don’t have the basic requirements such as a Speedometer, Headlights, Turn Signal, Mirrors, seatbelts and a number of other features. Police say Golf carts should be used for the game of golf, and they’re working to keep drivers…. On course.
