Greater Sudbury Utilities working to restore power in New Sudbury
Greater Sudbury Utilities is working to restore the power for roughly 70 customers in the Woodbine/Chestnut area of New Sudbury. There’s no word as to what caused the outage.
Swimming Advisory issued at Ramsey Lake beaches
Public Health Sudbury and Districts have issued swimming advisories for two Ramsey Lake beaches. Signage has been posted at Maintenance Beach and the Northern Water Sports Centre beach due to higher than acceptable bacteriological water quality standards. Public Health will notify the public when the bacterial levels return to normal.
Ion scanner coming to North Bay Jail
The North Bay Jail has a new tool for inmate safety. An ion scanner to detect and identify microscopic and trace residues of chemical substances such as narcotics. The facility is among 25 correctional facilities in the province to receive the scanners.
OPP respond to MVC on Highway 11
Temiskaming OPP and EMS responded to a single motor vehicle rollover on Highway 11 near Armstrong-Evanturel Boundary Road. A preliminary investigation revealed that a motor vehicle was travelling on Highway 11 when it lost control and struck the ditch. The lone occupant of the vehicle did not sustain any injuries but was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
Rezoning request causing concern with neighbours
Discussions are underway in regards to a parking and rezoning request in Powassan. The new owner of the apartment building at the corner of Main Street and Clark Street has expressed an interest in renovating the building, to create an additional two apartments with parking. Homeowners directly to the west of the apartment say that will close up space for a shared entrance and exit driveway.
No injuries following a big-rig crash in Greater Sudbury
There were, thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of the collision yesterday in Greater Sudbury. This is as a transport truck crashed on Big Nickel Mine Road late Tuesday morning. The road was currently closed for some time. There is no word as to what led to the crash.

The Gathering Place and Cassellholme Home for the Aged in North Bay have joined forces for those in need. This fall, they will launch what’s being called The Grand Parade. The event, similar to the Coldest Night of the Year, will take place on Sept. 18. The walk can be done virtually, however, the route will be from Cassellholme to the Gathering Place and back to raise support for those in need.
First Nation Evacuees finally heading home
Pikangikum First Nation evacuees are heading home, as the state of emergency in Timmins has been lifted. The state of emergency was declared on July 14, the same day people from the northwestern Ontario community that was being threatened by forest fires started arriving in Timmins. The last 47 people from Pikangikum First Nation headed home yesterday. The state of emergency was to allow the city to access additional provincial resources and aid.
Mattawa’s Vendors Market on this Sunday
After a strong start to Mattawa’s first vendors market at Explorer’s Point on July 18, a second one is now scheduled for this Sunday. Nine vendors were on hand for the first market and 16 have signed up for the second.
OPP pulled teen driver off the road
Temiskaming OPP has pulled a teen driver off the road. It happened on Highway 11 near Tobler’s Road, following concerns from other drivers. The southbound teen was stopped, the vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded. Police are reminding drivers of the dangers of driving impaired.
Searchmont will open this winter
In the dog days of Summer, Searchmont in Sault Ste Marie says, they have plans to open this winter with new lifts and trails and renovated villas. The decision comes after the resort was forced to stay inactive last season due to COVID-19’s battering of the hospitality, tourism and recreation sectors.
