Alleged arsonist sought by Police
Greater Sudbury Police are looking for a man wanted for arson. They have released surveillance footage of a man they believe to be the person who set fire to the LiUNA building on Clinton Avenue. Footage shows a man approaching the rear door of the building with a container of accelerator, and lighting it up before getting into a two-door, dark Pontiac Sunfire that was being operated by a second male individual.
Renovations underway at the Motherhouse
The St. Joseph Motherhouse in North Bay will soon be the home of a $3.6-million seniors’ housing expansion project. Expected to get underway this month, the plan is to create 10 new units and convert 24 existing ones, into apartments for seniors over the age of 65. The project will be completed next year
A pay-equity causing issues with programming?
There are mixed reviews when it comes to a new pay-equity at the Canadian Mental Health Association in Cochrane-Timiskaming. Reports say that roughly 170 workers with CHMA will receive pay equity adjustments 23 years after the plan was first negotiated in 1994. As a result, roughly $1.6-million in retroactive pay will be shelled out. The result could be a loss in some programming, such as the 32-year-old Violence Against Women initiative.
2nd Gogama report expected for today
Eyes and ears in the north will be harnessed to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada this morning, as they hold a news conference, where they are expected to release their report on the second Gogama train derailment of 2015. On March 7th of that year, a train pulling oil tankers left the tracks and then burst into flames near the small northern Ontario town.
A face-lift is coming for the Sudbury terminal
The Greater Sudbury Downtown Transit Terminal will soon have a fresh, new look.
Renovations for the terminal started on Monday and are expected to continue until the end of November, with both interior and exterior work being completed.
The bears are back… but it’s not so bad.
While bears calls are up in the city of Greater Sudbury… they are not what they were in 2016. Organisations such as the Ministry of Natural resources and forestry say, specifically, many of the calls that have come in are less serious than last year. Others simply revolve around general information about managing attractants. So far this summer, the ministry’s Bear Wise reporting line has drawn 386, up from 349 from last year.
Former inn headed for Condo status.
Work has started on the Sands Inn on McIntyre Street in North Bay, ahead of a major renovation project. Redeveloping work will see the building turned into high-end condos. So far, the work being done is simply to see if the building itself is structurally sound.
Concerned citizens call in impaired drivers
Timmins Police have cranked out the numbers when it comes to Impaired driving within the community. Concerned citizens have called in drivers resulted in four arrests in Timmins over the past month. Kate Catin with City Police says when it comes to community safety overall, public information is key.
The drinking and driving charges have been laid on 4 males, all between the ages of 26-57
